April Service Stars

Each month Kerbey Lane Cafe honors two Service Stars. These are team members who exemplify the KLC core values, who lend an extra helping hand, and who are all ‘round awesome people. They are certainly worthy of a spot on our blog. Check them out!

How long have you worked at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

Two and a half years.

What is your favorite thing about working at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

It’s fascinating to me how much work goes on behind the scenes to get food to guests. So much is going on, and I think it's pretty amazing that we get all the pieces to move together day in and day out.

Tell us a little about yourself and what motivates you as a volunteer.

As a kid I took advantage of a lot of public and nonprofit programs like the public library and Girl Scouts. Now when I volunteer, it’s cool to see the progress made in the programs due to volunteer participation. I enjoy giving back, especially since I had so many great opportunities growing up.

What causes do you care most about?

I've been known to get pretty fired up about economic and gender inequality.

Which volunteer opportunity that Kerbey has offered have you enjoyed the most?

Feast of Sharing! It's always rewarding to bring Thanksgiving dinner to community members that aren't able to enjoy service at a restaurant.

Why do you think Kerbey Lane makes giving back one of its priorities?

I think Kerbey is invested in creating and growing community–whether it’s among team members, guests, or the greater Austin area. We provide a sense of belonging to all at the restaurant and grow those relationships by volunteering in the community.

If you could meet one person, who would it be?

They aren't people, but I would love to meet the dogs from the Harlow and Sage Instagram account. Meeting Barack Obama would be pretty cool, too.

Favorite pancake flavor:

Lemon Poppy Seed – add blueberries.

How long have you worked at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

It will be 5 years in May.

What is your favorite thing about working at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

The fact that they offer the Great Game of Business (GGOB–teaching employees to think and act like owners) gives me to opportunity to learn about business, enrich my knowledge and help me to accomplish my career goals.

Tell me about one of your favorite moments at Kerbey.

When Marc fought that guy outside on the patio. Or when Tiny Tim used to dunk on the line. Volunteering at El Buen Pastor.

Tell us a little about yourself and what motivates you to give great service to guests.

At the end of the day, I know I will feel better if I have done the best job that I could.

Are there any skills you use as a team member here at Kerbey that come in handy during everyday life?

The 10-4 rule! (When you find yourself within ten feet of a customer, make friendly eye contact. If you’re within four feet of a customer, say something friendly.) Walking down the street and talking to people, it makes them open up more.

What’s your favorite pancake flavor?

Blueberry swirl with bananas.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

I’ve always thought being able to transport places would be cool, cooler than flying.

What’s your spirit animal?

I’d really like to say it is a rhino or a lion but it’s not, I see monarch butterflies everywhere I go and I think that’s it.

Congratulations to our April Service Stars!
