August Service Stars

Each month Kerbey Lane Cafe honors two Service Stars. These are team members who exemplify the KLC core values, who lend an extra helping hand, and who are all ‘round awesome people. They are certainly worthy of a spot on our blog. Check them out!

“Luis is a really hard-working. Although he is scheduled to be a busser, he always jumps to be on expo as well. Whatever side job he has to do, he always does it very well, never cutting corners. Everybody loves to work with Luis!” –Aey Sanguanrueang

How long have you worked at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

3 years.

What is your favorite thing about working at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

The environment, I love the people I work with. Kerbey is the best place I have worked.

Tell me about one of your favorite moments at KLC.

I can’t think of anything in particular, but I always enjoy seeing the people I work with. They are like family.

In your three years at Kerbey, what positions have you held and which do you like best?

With the exception of cooking, I've done it all, but I like to expo the best because it’s fast paced. I like the challenge.

Are there any skills you use as a team member here at Kerbey that come in handy during everyday life?

Definitely multi-tasking. Having a great memory (from taking orders as a server) is always helpful, too.

What’s your favorite pancake flavor?

Buttermilk with a cinnamon swirl.

What’s your spirit animal?

A bear. My Grandpa gave me the nickname “Oso” (bear in Spanish) as a child, and that’s the name I am known by within my family.

Community Service Star: Garrett Lively

Find him at: our Westlake location

“Garrett is a true leader. I always know that when Garrett puts his name on a sign up sheet, others are sure to follow. People just want to be around him because he's so funny and such a hard worker. He's always the first person to every event and the last to leave when the job is done. Kerbey and Austin are better with Garrett!” –Quinn Ripley

How long have you worked at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

Since April of 2014.

What is your favorite thing about working at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

I really enjoy the people that I work with, they’re fun to be around. I’m a goofy guy and I enjoy being surrounded by people that can put up with me and my pranks. It’s a great company to work for—the opportunities to give back to the community are a large part of what has kept me here.

Tell us a little about yourself and what motivates you as a volunteer.

I took on a lot of responsibility helping to raise my siblings, as the oldest of three in a single parent household. I got a lot of satisfaction out of watching my siblings grow up and knowing that I had played a part in their success.

What causes do you care most about?

I’m most interested in causes relating to food. I really enjoyed the Urban Roots volunteer program, because I got to see the literal fruits of my labor. The Feast of Sharing, where we serve Thanksgiving meals to the hungry, is another one of my favorite events to get involved with.

Why do you believe it’s important to volunteer?

I’ve had a pretty good life and not everyone has had the opportunities I’ve had. I want to exercise my ability to make the world a better place.

Why do you think Kerbey Lane makes giving back one of its priorities?

We have great leadership and that sprinkles down--it starts at the top, and it’s infectious. Kerbey has the resources to do something within their community, so they make it happen.

Are there any skills you use as team member at Kerbey that come in handy during volunteer projects?

I’ve expo’d the majority of my time at KLC and with that comes a lot of delegation. A lot of times with volunteer events we’re on a limited schedule and have large projects, and I’m able to speak up and formulate a plan to get it accomplished. I’ve also gotten really good at withstanding the heat (both in the kitchen and outdoors).

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

Teleportation, in order to avoid Austin traffic.

Congratulations to our August Service Stars!
