January Service Stars

Each month Kerbey Lane Cafe honors two Service Stars. These are team members who exemplify the KLC core values, who lend an extra helping hand, and who are all ‘round awesome people. They are certainly worthy of a spot on our blog. Check them out!

How long have you worked at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

7 months.

What is your favorite thing about working at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

I’ve been coming to Kerbey since I was a kid; I just love the friendly environment. And of course, my coworkers.

Tell us a little about yourself and what motivates you as a volunteer.

I am where I am today because I received help along the way, and that’s what motivates me to give back.

What causes do you care most about?

The environment. The technology exists for us to be able to live sustainably and the exploration and implementation of alternative energy sources are something I’m passionate about.

Which volunteer opportunity that Kerbey has offered have you enjoyed the most?

I most enjoyed our volunteer day benefiting Habitat for Humanity.

Why do you think Kerbey Lane makes giving back one of its priorities?

It’s a family-owned business that feels compelled to give back to the community that has supported them for over 35 years. Kerbey also does a lot to give back to employees as individuals through advancement training and volunteer opportunities.

Are there any skills you use as a team member at Kerbey that come in handy during volunteer projects?

Selflessness. When I’m serving, it’s not about me–it’s about providing a great experience for my customers. Similarly, when I volunteer, it’s not about me–it’s about helping others.

If you could meet one person alive today, who would it be?

Dr. Cornel West (philosopher, political activist, social critic, author, public intellectual). I’m currently reading one of his books now and I like his approach to change. I actually did have the chance to meet him once on the Howard University campus.

How long have you worked at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

A year and a half.

What is your favorite thing about working at Kerbey Lane Cafe?

Definitely my coworkers. It’s nice to work in an environment where people are supportive.

Tell me about one of your favorite moments at KLC.

My favorite moment has to be when I saved a customer’s life! I realized the customer was choking and after his wife was unsuccessful at the Heimlich maneuver, I offered to help because I had received Heimlich training as a lifeguard. I never got the chance to use the training at the pool, but it came in handy at Kerbey. The customer left in good health and both he and his wife expressed their gratitude.

Tell us a little about yourself and what motivates you to give great service to guests.

My philosophy is pretty simple–I treat people the way I would like to be treated.

Are there any skills you use as a team member here at Kerbey that come in handy during everyday life?

Communication. Working at Kerbey has really helped me to open up more and I make an effort to find ways I can relate to people. Developing positive relationships is what it’s all about!

What’s your favorite pancake flavor?

Blueberry with a cinnamon swirl.

What’s your spirit animal?

I would have to say my spirit animal is a panther; I’m very cat-like. I like attention and I love to sleep, but I’m more bold and courageous than a house cat.

Congratulations to our January Service Stars!
