Austin Cafe Artist

Meet featured artist, Yvonne Póo!

Her artwork will be on display until May 2, 2016 at our Round Rock location and again in July & August at our Westlake location.

Yvonne was born in Mexico City, where she lived until the age of 26. She obtained a B.A. in Graphic Design from the Universidad Latinoamericana, and upon moving to Texas she landed a job as a graphic designer in Houston. Yvonne’s desire to be a graphic designer spawned from her love of fine arts and she found that her talent for painting and sketching helped to expand her creativity into the realm of graphic design. When the recession of 2008 hit, Yvonne found herself without a job and that’s when she became inspired to pick up the paintbrush again.

Though Yvonne was a successful graphic designer, she came to regret her decision to abandon art. It has been in the last few years that she rediscovered her life’s true calling. On her website she states, “Now, I have taken up the paintbrush—or was taken up by the paintbrush—and have once again embarked on one of the most joyful journeys of my life, to find my creativity and myself.”

Back in 2000 Yvonne took English as a second language (ESL) at the University of Texas and immediately fell in love with the Capital City. She would frequent the UT Kerbey Lane location, and during her visits she would admire the local art hanging on the walls. She dreamed that one day it would be her artwork on display for others to admire. In 2011, Yvonne and her husband made Austin their permanent residence. She finds that there are similarities between Austin and the small bohemian-inspired city of Coyoacan, located in Southern Mexico City, where she spent much of her childhood. Yvonne expressed that for her, Austin cultivates a certain openness and energy that encourages freedom of creative expression, which has allowed her career as an artist to take off.

When asked about the inspiration for her work, Yvonne told us that she is inspired by nature, down to the tiniest microbe. She provided the following statement: “My work is inspired by the most exotic elements of nature. I love vibrant colors and see them as a tool for my own freedom. Art has always felt natural to me, and its one of the few things that gives me a feeling of complete happiness and peace. By combining the beauty of the natural world with the world of my own imagination, I hope to create something new. In a sense, my art is my own surreal paradise! My vision is one day to make a fusion that reflects my love for tropical and whimsical, and create a world between Alice in Wonderland and a rainforest. I have called my own world "Bloombaza Paradise" because to me it means that everything blooms in it!”

Patrons of Kerbey Lane Cafe can now catch a glimpse of this “Bloombaza Paradise” on the walls at our Round Rock location. As Yvonne’s body of work expands, we look forward to gaining more insight into her imagination through her art, where tropical and whimsical elements collide on canvas.
